Jim,
I know it took a while to get you a decent answer to your question. But I was attending a seminar this weekend and there, right before me, was the answer. Apparently the "space age" cure for disc problems is a very heavily marketed and very expensive piece of equipment which is capable of decompressing the vertebral disc with some computer-tech feedbacks. The process is done frequently over a period of weeks and cost about 6K to get in the door. Some, of that cost is paid by insurance.

Here is the rub. Disc decompression has been reinvented since the time of Hippocrates. It takes many forms; incline boards, traction, inversion tables, etc. Like most things therapeutic, some people respond well and some don't. These modalities are embraced by many healthcare providers and shunned by even more.

The theory behind the general idea seems logical, but the science is inconsistent. My professional experience with disc decompression leads me to admit, I'm underwhelmed with the results obtained, however I see little harm in it.

As far as ALBP (acute low back pain) the fancy machines do not seem to have any great advantage over periodic laying on your back (on the floor) with hips flexed and feet up (on the couch). We all can do the math...can't we.

The research on this new generation of machine is very sketchy. But the paper that has been liberally quoted was done by a C. Norman Shealy, MD, PhD. (I found it at http://iddtherapy.co.uk/assets/pdfs/7AJPM199.pdf ) . The research has sightings of very favorable claims, however the actual journal is not peer review, and it was published with a "what's new in technology" theme. Even the editor of the journal, couched the particular findings as limited and vague.

Also it seems that this "space age" claim was also using NASA's name. Ooops, a cease and desist order was filed and that's why; "Suddenly the ads have disappeared from radio and newspapers."

Now there are some Florida doctor's in court for charging for a surgical procedure when they only used this device. They are suing the manufacturer claiming they were told to bill using those codes by the manufacturer reps. And so it goes.

Mostly, it is MD led clinics that are using this, however, I see some big-time ads in chiropractic product review publications. So I suppose it is a matter of time before my profession jumps on the band wagon.

Professionally, I don't get it as traditional chiropractic has absolutely stellar results with dealing with the types of patients that go in for decompression therapy...so lets just hope more chiropractors just learn how to adjust. I know it's harder than writing a check, but in the end everybody would be happier.
Cheers,

Jim,
You've got that right. How about flying a plane full of passengers. Personally, I wouldn't feel safe if an automated voice said. "Captain Jim is in Rio, but a $9 a month auto-responder is taking over. Have a nice flight."

Mr. Ferriss has written a very interesting and provocative book, however. He's young and smart, but that's no substitute for knowing Jesus. The book shows his wanting through his lame attempt at finding significance. Let's pray for him...Imagine the outreach that talent could provide...The Four Hour Christian!

Just finished The Four Hour Work Week. Great ideas for streamlining one's life. Not reading the newspapers and watching TV news is certainly one way to save time and worry.

However, his suggestions for business only apply to a limited number of opportunities. Try doing chiropractic adjustments by computer. He seems to forget that some people actually love what they do for a living and would not want to cut back their involvement; only to make it it more efficient and effective in the time expended.

[...] Right now I’m kind of hating the media. I know that’s a sweeping statement and I apologize for being so general. A couple weeks ago I came across an article about a subject I posted in May; If I Were King, which was about education concepts. I highlighted the efforts of Nicholas Negroponte, the former MIT Media Lab director and founder of the One Laptop Per Child project. [...]
